San Sebastián International Film Festival: A Hidden Gem No More?
The San Sebastián International Film Festival has long been a hidden gem in the world of cinema, but is it finally shedding its "hidden" status? Despite its impressive history and reputation, the festival has remained somewhat under the radar, overshadowed by its more prominent European counterparts.
One of the key strengths of the festival, according to director José Luis Rebordinos, is its unique identity. "We can’t be a major market, but we can have interesting industry activities like the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum or the Investors’ Conference," he says. This focus on specialized events has allowed the festival to carve out its own niche.
The festival's charm lies in its size and atmosphere. "We are a festival with a large enough audience to interest both the industry and critics, but small enough to feel human and welcoming," Rebordinos explains. This intimate setting allows for meaningful connections between filmmakers, industry professionals, and local artists.
San Sebastián has a rich history, having been recognized with "A" status in 1957, just four years after its inception. Early visitors included legendary figures like Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock, and Audrey Hepburn. The festival's Donostia Award, established in 1986, has honored iconic actors and filmmakers such as Gregory Peck, Bette Davis, and Al Pacino.
In recent years, the festival has expanded its industry events, including the Creative Investors’ Conference and the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum. These initiatives have attracted over 2,400 professionals from 1,500 companies across 65 countries, solidifying the festival's status as a key player in global film production.
The festival's impact extends beyond the film industry. It has become a significant contributor to the regional Basque economy, with an estimated economic impact of 47.9 million euros in 2024. This growth is evident in the increasing number of Basque productions screening at the festival, with 37 local films featured last year.
However, the festival's selective approach to Basque films is a double-edged sword. While it ensures high-quality content, it also raises questions about accessibility. Mar Izquierdo, coordinator of Zineuskadi, a nonprofit supporting the Basque industry, acknowledges the challenge of selecting films, stating, "José Luis has always said he wouldn’t want Basque productions to be here for free."
Despite this, the festival's influence on the industry is undeniable. San Sebastián has proven to be a launchpad for Spanish and Latin American talent, with films that go on to achieve critical and commercial success. For example, Basque filmmaker Alauda Ruiz de Azúa's film "Sundays" won the Golden Shell prize at the festival and later swept the Goya Awards, Spain's equivalent of the Oscars.
The festival's popularity is further evidenced by its full theaters. Last year, 181,183 spectators attended 666 screenings of 254 titles from 56 countries, a 5.15% increase from the previous year. This thriving audience engagement is a testament to the festival's ability to captivate and entertain.
As the festival transitions to a new era with the retirement of José Luis Rebordinos and the appointment of Maialen Beloki as his successor, San Sebastián International Film Festival is poised to continue its legacy as a premier destination for cinema enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
